Question: Tax File Number, applied twice by accident?
Applied online, heard it wouldn’t work so i called up and they said it won’t work because it’s for immigrants only even though i came for NewZealand (i’m in school at the moment).
So they told me to reapply at my school. I did so yesterday, but today when i came home i received my Tax File Number date issued before i sent in the one from school. Must be from the online one?
What should i do now, because my school has already sent in the application…call them up? or will it just get cancelled anyway. Thanks!
Answer: I would call up just in case you need to cancel the second application.
It shouldn’t be a big deal anyway as they will have records of the applications but to be prudent just call up.

Question: How do I file my taxes if Im married to an illegal alien?
So, this situation is a bit more complicated.
I’m a US citizen and she is an illegal alien, however, she entered this country under a VISA that has now expired. She has a Social Security Number that is legitimate an was assigned to her while she was still a legal non-resident alien. Last year we started working for the same employer, she gave them her SSN, and she received a W2.
Should we file together, should we include her w2? We are in the process of changing her status to a permanent resident. If we file our taxes with her W2, will this affect her application for a green card? I’m really worried to do the right thing. I would hate to show up to that dreaded immigration interview to be told that my wife wasn’t supposed to be working and her green card will be denied!
She has paid all of her taxes, since she used her SSN – would the IRS care if she doesnt file? Would immigration care?
Answer: Once she overstayed her visa she was out of status and she has not legal right to work, and I think you already know that. As an illegal she has no right to work or live in the USA, However for her not to file taxes while working well she will be in trouble, then again she will be in trouble for working when she is not suppose to; so yes they will care that she has not filed. And, probably it will come up at her interview why she was working illegally and not filing taxes.
You need a lawyer and if you do not do this the ‘correct’ way it could affect her green card application.

Question: How do I get a tax file number to work in Australia?
Apparently to get a job in Oz you need a tax file number and an Australian bank account. How do I go about getting these? I don’t want to go through a company who will wack a load of charges on doing it for me.
Is there a way of setting it all up without a permanent address?!

Answer: first you need a visa to work here, then go to the Australian tax office to have a number issued to you, they only give it once & it is yours for life, but no fixed address no bank account, also not a resident/long term stay in Australia, no bank account
