Question: UK Tax Refund for non-residents.?

In November 2008 I send P85s and P45 to HM Revenue&Customs to refund the taxes(i am from Latvia)As they say Anyone who has lived and worked in the UK may be eligible to claim for a tax refund.Still nothing. They just send me letter that they changed my tax code and that they worked my personal allowance. What shall i do to get my taxes back?

Answer: Some tax offices have 8-10 weeks post on hand, so I think you will have to wiat longer Im afraid. The issue of the new tax code for next year is an automatic thing and does not mean they have looked at your claim.

Question: Tax rebate DIY?

I am interested in how to go about doing a UK tax rebate myself?I started work in january, and until the end of the 2007 tax year (apr 05) i have earned 8400 GBP gross, and paid roughly ~2000GBP tax (My annual income is 42K). According to taxfix.co.uk ’s calculator i am entitled to 1450GBP Tax Refund, and there are many companies which can do the paperwork for me but they take around 10% which would be cca 145GBP which is not a small sum. I am interested is their service worth it, or should i go that extra mile, and do it myself, and save myself the fee?
What are your experiences with these kinds of things?

Thanks!!
Update: No, I did not work from Apr 06-Dec 06 because i have just moved over to UK in Jan, so for the entire tax year 06-07 I have worked only Jan 07-Apr 07

Answer: You will not have to complete a tax return. Did you complete a form P86 when you started work? If not go to www.hmrc.gov.uk and download the form from there. You will need to wait until you get your form P60 (certificate of pay and tax deducted) from your employer – probably at the end of April. Complete the P86 and send it to your tax office (your employer will give you the name and address) with the P60 and a covering letter saying you think you are due a refund of tax and also ask them to allocate personal allowances to your 07-08 PAYE code number – this will make sure you pay the right tax in the coming tax year.
It is simple and straightforward, no need for an agent to do it for you. If you get stuck, phone the HMRC helpline, or go into your local tax enquiry centre.

The premise of my debut column for Reuters, on News Corp’s taxes, was wrong, 100 percent dead wrong.Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp did not get a $4.8 billion tax refund for the past four years, as I reported.
