Question: Have not filed 2009 taxes!?

What will happen since I am now late and did not request any extensions. Long story short, I was deployed for half of 2009 and then PCSed overseas in 2010, hence I have not filed yet and it is now 2011. Since I was deployed to a tax free zone in 2009 and my W2 shows earnings of only $19k, I should not owe, but what will happen when I do file since I will be late? Thank you.

Answer: So?

If you were in a combat zone, your deadlines are extended. If the date becomes an issue, put combat zone and the dates at the top of your return. (2009 isn’t an issue until 2013)

$19K is still $19K. Whether or not you owe will depend on the amount withheld. if you don’t owe, no problem.

Question: How do I find out why I didn’t get my WI state Tax Refund?

I filed my taxes online with the free version of Turbo tax about 2.5 months ago. I had to file Federal and both MN and WI state forms. I received my federal and MN rebates almost immediately but never got my WI one. Since WI is my homestate but I worked there less than half the year, I had to print out some weird form and sign it and mail it in. I did immediately but never received my check. Who can I contact about this?

Answer: I am by far no expert but I can tell you this. I mailed our state tax in Jan, around the 27th/28th.
When it still haden’t showed up by April 14th, I called the state and they said to be on the safe side to resend our tax information.
I send that out on April 15.
I called today to check on the status and it had just been processed as of 5/1.
Now, I am not sure if this is due to the first tax we sent out or the 2nd but if it was from the first, that means it took over 12 weeks to get it processed. Now I have to wait another 7-10 working days for it to show up.

If I were you, I would resend your taxes.

Question: How much should I be getting back?

I attempted to file my state tax return on a free website, and I am confused because it says I should only be getting a return of $99.

I am 22 years old, but I was 21 on December 31st, 2008. I had two different part time jobs in 2008.

Job 1:

Total Wages 6343.54
Federal income tax withheld: 388.05
State income Tax Withheld: 95.00

Job 2:

Total Wages: 3,629
Federal Tax withheld: 164
Social Security tax withheld: 225.00
Medicare Tax withheld: 52.62
State Income tax: 34.00

I worked both of these same jobs last year and got almost all of my federal returns back. I was thinking my return would be in the $400ish range, why are the websites saying it is so low?

I am a full time college student, and my dad claims me as a dependent. This hasn’t changed from last year. Could somebody explain it to me?

Answer: To begin with, your father should not claim you if you make this much money. He needs to show that he paid more than 50% of your living expenses, meaning more than twice your 9972.54, basically 20,000 dollars. If he can show that then he can deduct you, otherwise he can not. He also has to show he pays for where you live and that you are in fact a full time student.

Filing single you should get back 451.05

Filing as a dependent you should you get 99.05

But your income argues that you can not be a dependent.

And the why is because you deductions drop from 8950 down to 5450 raising your taxes owed by 362 dollars and reducing you rebate by the same. Your dad is getting your 3500 dollar personal exemption.

You should tell him he owed you 362.

Question: Will we qualify for $8000 first time home buyer credit?

We purchased a house last year (May of 2008). Filed the taxes already and got $7,500 tax credit loan from the government for first time home buyers, it’ll have to be paid off interest free for 15 years beginning 2010. Since the stimulus bill passed and now they are saying that first time home buyers with certain incomes will get $8,000 that you don’t have to pay back, will we qualify for this? Our house was purchased at a date that’s included in the stimulus for this year. Will we just get $500 and won’t have to pay anything back now? Or do we not qualify for this new $8000 at all? Anyone know anything about this?

Answer: The $8000 deal is for 2009 only.
Your May 2008 purchase is only eligible for the $7500 loan.
