Divorce Taxes Mortgage Interest

Question: Can I share the interest/prop tax deduction with ex?

Our divorce just became final last month. He moved out last year. This entire year to date he has continued to pay 1/2 the mortgage and will until the house sells. In turn, I agreed to split the interest and taxes deduction to benefit him for helping me. It’s not in our divorce papers. Will I have a problem with the IRS since the divorce is final and not noted and he doesn’t live there?
Ok, we are both on the mortgage and deed so I should be OK with the sharing?
I planned to draft a letter for both of us to sign to the agreement. Does this help?

Answer: I don’t see anything wrong with you splitting the deductions since you are both paying them and you are both liable on the mortgage.

One caution: Whose name (and SS#) is the interest being reported to on Form 1098? That person will claim the interest on Sch. A. on the line that says Form 1098. The other will claim it on the line below (no need to fill in name, address, etc., since the payments are going to a mortgage company).

What can I do regarding tax issues etc. in a divorce?

Filing Taxes Online For 2008

Filing Taxes Online For 2008

Question: How do I file a 1099 for property taxes on my own? I can’t use my online service w/o upgrading.?

I need to file a 1099 for my 2008 property taxes. I can’t use my free online service without paying/upgrading. How do I file a 1099 for property taxes on my own?

Answer: Interest you paid is shown on form 1098. Sometimes a mortgage company will also show you the amount of property taxes paid from your equity account.

You have to itemize your taxes on Schedule A to claim property taxes. How did you claim the interest on your mortgage? Is the home paid for? If so, there probably isn’t enough in just property tax to itemize unless you had other substantial expenses last year.

In either case, you will have to either upgrade your software or use the paper tax forms and mail them in.

Gross Income Estimator

Gross Income Estimator

Question: Does this sound like the right amount for my tax return? It doesn’t seem fair =(?

I’m not married yet, 27, live in MN and I claim 0 on my taxes.
I have two jobs and income stats for last year are as follows:
(I don’t have any crazy things either like schooling or a mortgage. I just pay on student loans)

Total Gross Income:
24,544

Federal taxes withheld: 2,928
State taxes withheld: 1,326

I have no children yet either.

H&R Block’s website estimated $1,000 for my refund… that seems low to me? Especially since the government took over $4,000 of my hard earned, small amount of money last year.

Could H&R Block’s estimator be wrong?!

Last year I made a few thousand less with only one job and I got $1,300 back.

Tax Refund Singapore

Tax Refund Singapore

Question: New Jersey state Tax filing from Singapore.( Internationally)?

I am eligible for refunds for 2006 state tax. I moved here to Singapore a few months back. Can I still file for tax refunds from here ? I am wondering because there is no field for “country” in the Tax form. I believe I can’t file online (e-tax) from other countries, internationally. So I am planning to send the paper form. I want to ask whether am I on the correct track? If some one has a bit of time to answer my question, I’d be thankful.
Best!
