Question: Can I get a Tax Refund with unemployment?
I would like to know if I will get a refund. I turn in the forms to withhold taxes but they never did it and I was told that I will not get a refund because I didn’t pay taxes doing the year. i also have two dependents
Answer: If you had Federal withholding’s deducted from your UI benefits and you meet other filing requirements, then yes you can. The IRS website has a link for free efile services where you can find out but the state that provided your benefits should have sent you a 1099G, it will list any taxes that may have been deducted, check box 4.
With children, you can still receive Earned Income Credit, despite not having paid any taxes.

Electronic Filing Cabinet
Question: Has anyone gone paperless with their scanner?
I have tons of paper from school, tax stuff, hand written notes, bank stuff, car records, insurance stuff, and all kinds of paper, it’s a mess. Anyone ever gone from huge filing cabinet to electronic with the help of a scanner? The amount of paper everywhere is getting out of control. Throwing away is not an option. What have you done to reduce or eliminate the paper clutter?
Answer: If you want to do this, you’re going to need a sheetfed scanner – your best bet is probably a good multifunction printer/fax machine with an ADF (automatic document feeder). Expect to pay more than $100. Note that these will generally be slower than dedicated scanners, but dedicated scanners can easily run from $400 up to thousands of dollars.
I’ve used the Canon MP530 and been fairly happy – it’s good for documents, and the included software allows a reasonably decent batch scanning mode that lets you scan things longer than what will fit in the scanner’s feed in one shot.
The other thing you should be sure to do is set up some sort of backups, ideally offsite. There are multiple online storage services; one of the best to look at right now is Amazon’s S3 service. JungleDisk and JetS3t are two things you might use to get files in and out of that storage.

Question: Will i Recieve my personal Tax Refund before i have sent my BAS to the ATO ?
I have worked 6 Months as an employee and 6 Months as a business owner. I am expecting a refund from work as an employee. Not sure if my BAS must be completed before the ATO sends my refund.
Answer: BAS is concerned with a different tax from your income tax. It is a record of the GST that you have received and paid. Your income tax refund will be paid regardless of your BAS, but bearing in mind that your BAS has to be submitted by the end of July, I think it’s a moot point.
