Question: Penalties for paying tax on time but failing to file by the extension deadline?

Last year I paid a very fair estimated amount (likely 5-10% too much) at the April 15th due date. However, I still have not actualy filed for that year. I am about to file for that year (and the current one), but was curious, should I expect any penalities or fines for the late filing?

Answer: 25% of the underpayment or zero.

Question: when is the deadline for filing tax if you have already filed an extension?

Answer: If you are filing an individual tax return (Form 1040, 1040-A or 1040-EZ) and filed the extension properly, you will have until October 15 to file your tax return.

(In previous years, the initial extension request only got you an extension to August 15, with the option to file for an additional extension to October 15–the new system is a lot more friendly to the taxpayer)

The extension is only an extension to file your return–it is not an extension to pay your taxes. If you have any tax due, you’ll be liable for the tax plus interest.

Question: Is it a “big deal” to file an extension for my fed taxes?

On the deadline my tax accountant told me he was filing an extension for me and he’d get my return done within the month. I assumed (A$S=U+ME situation, of course), that since I had not heard otherwise, the 3+ weeks they had to prepare my return would be enough time, but instead after placing two calls, (the day before and the day of the tax deadline) I finally learned my tax return was not complete and he’d just “quick, figure out my estimated taxes owed/due me” and file an extension. Am I over-reacting to be so upset that tax day came and went and he thought it ok to just pat me on the top of the head and say we’ll just file an extension and get to it once things die down?!?! All I’m saying is that a little communication would have prepared me for this and reassured me that this isn’t a problem, but for all I know that day would’ve come and gone and I’d still be sitting here wondering today if my information fell behind the bookshelf or if someone was actually working on it!?

Answer: Filing for an extension is normally no big deal, as long as you made a reasonable payment toward the amount you expect to owe. In your case, I think you have every right to be upset that your tax preparer didn’t explain the process to you at all as you went along. You have to decide whether his accounting knowledge is enough to make up for his abominable people skills.

Question: Canada Revenue Agency Deadline Extension?

I need to file for an extension for my Canada tax return. I can’t find anything on CRA’s website, and an internet search turns up nothing other than how to file for an extension with the IRS (with the United States).

How do I properly let the CRA know that I am requesting an extension to the deadline?

Answer: There is no way to receive an extention. You will just be filing late. Any amount you owe will receive a 5% penalty at the stroke of midnight on May 1st. On the first of each month 1% interest will be added.

If you have no balance owing, there really is no deadline.

CRA will only waive penalty and interest in extreme cases. The death of a parent, or even out of the country, can’t qualify.
