Question: What Should i Do if There is Excess Income Tax Withheld and Company does not want to refund?

Hello Recently i got my W-2 Form and as i was entered the information on Turbotax It tells me that there was Excess Social Security Tax Withheld, now my employer owes me money and i asked for a refund and a W-2C Corrected, But What if my employer is not willing to pay back my refund? What should i do?

Answer: First job huh?

Your employer doesn’t have it, they sent it to the IRS and your state tax board.

You send them (IRS, state tax) the forms and they refund you the money.

Tax Refund Processing Time

Tax Refund Processing Time

Question: How long does it take to get your Tax Refund back after getting a reference code 1481?

The IRS received the return on 2/17 and I checked the “where’s my refund” site and it said I should receive my refund by 3/1. Checked the site again on 2/24 and it said I should receive my refund by 3/8. Now I just checked again today and I received a reference code of 1481. I called the IRS several times and no one at the IRS gives me the same answer. The first lady said 4 to 6 weeks. Second guy said there is no delay and I need to give it 3 weeks processing time “at least” third guy said my return has not been processed yet, there is a delay, but he can’t give me any time line of when I might get it. Anyone else have this problem and how long did it take to get your money? Thanks

Answer: The IRS is currently experiencing a number of delays due to the surge in returns forced by their delay in filing a number of forms until mid Feb. Calling is as helpful as yelling at the moon because the people that answer the phone really do not know when your refund will be processed. At best their guess is slightly more informed than the response you get from the moon*

Tax Refund Deceased

Question: I’m 17 and need help filing my taxes?

This year federal income tax withheld $495. Also Social security withheld another $434 plus another $100 for medicare. Do I get that money refunded? Also which form do I fill out?

More Info: I have just received a W2 envelope. Also my father is deceased and my mother is being supported by her sister. She does not work so she doesn’t pay taxes. Not sure if that is relevant to my situation but I thought it might be.

Also what’s the difference between being claimed as a dependent or independent?

Answer: The situation with your parents does not mattter. It does matter if your mother claims you as a dependent (which she almost certainly does) on her Federal Income Tax, because then you cannot claim yourself on your return.

Social Security and Medicare Taxes are not refundable. Depending on how much money you made, all or part of the $495 withheld in Federal Income Tax may be refundable.

If your adjusted gross income was $54,000 or less in 2007, you can use Free File to prepare and e-file your taxes online:

http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html

Just enter the data from your W2 and make sure you check the box that says someone can claim you as a dependent.

Also, you can go to the H&R Block Tax Calculator (link below), enter your data and it will give you a good estimate of your taxes and refund.
