No Income Tax Texas

No Income Tax Texas

Question: Do we need to file a income tax form?

My husband is 66 and I am 65. Our only income is Social Security. No stocks bounds etc. No other income. Also at what age can you stop filing income tax forms? We live in Texas.

Answer: No, if your only income is social security, you don’t have to file a federal return. But this year only, if you had long distance service on your phone anytime between March 03 and July 06, you should file a form 1040EZ-T to get a refund of telephone excise tax. The form is short and easy, and it’ll get you $40. You can download a copy at irs.gov or pick one up at your local library.

No Income Tax Florida

No Income Tax Florida

Question: Why is Turbotax telling me to file a state tax return in Florida?

I may be mistaken, but usually Turbotax doesn’t ask me to purchase/file a state tax return. I’ve used Turbotax for years to file my taxes. Am I missing something? There is no state income tax in Florida, unless that changed recently. Any other idea why it would tell me that (glitch)?
Nope, I don’t own a business. I’m claiming the first-time home buyer tax credit. That’s really the only thing different this year.

Answer: Did you have any income from a business you own. It may be thinking you need to file for that.

Change Irs Address Online

Question: Change of address for my tax return?

I moved to a new address in December of last year (2008) and I want to use my new address for my return. However, my old address is probably still on file with the IRS and I want to e-file my return like I did last year. My question is do I have to send in the form to officially change my address with the IRS before I e-file or can I simply use my new address when I e-file online? I don’t want to run into issues with my refund due to mismatching addresses. I use direct deposit so it’s not an issue of the refund being sent to the wrong address, I just don’t want my refund to be delayed because of the address change. What should I do? Thanks so much!

Answer: No, just by filing your new return, your address on file with the IRS will be updated.

Illinois Tax Address Change

Illinois Tax Address Change

Question: Can I force my employer to amend my 2006 W-2?

I got a job with a company in Wisconsin in September 2006, but my permanent residence is still in Illinois. My wife and I decided not to move to WI until our kids finish the current school year. So, I rented a bedroom out of a house near where I work. I stay there during the week and go back to IL every weekend. Sometimes, I work a few weeks remotely from my home in IL. On my first day at my new job, I mistakenly filled out my W-4 with my WI address. Now, I’m having major issues with filing taxes, due to my resident status being “part-time”, while my wife’s is still “permanent”. Plus, the WI tax rate is twice as high as IL’s. I will save over $1000 if I can file as a full-time resident of IL. My employer has refused to amend my W-2 for 2006, because it wasnt’ their mistake. They claim they would be charged a lot of fees by the state to make make the change. I plan to see a professional tax consultant, but I was wondering what answers I might get here. What are my options?

Answer: The income was made in WI while you lived in WI, then you owe taxes to WI.

If this is a consulting position, you might have more room to negotiate. However, if this position is full time or require you physically show up for work in WI then it is difficult to suggest that you weren’t residing in WI.

You might be able to change your W-4 now and try to make some of your 2007 income to be IL income if your employer lets you. However, this is not exactly on the right side of the line. Consider for a moment – what is stopping every employee in the country having an address in, for example, state of Texas where there is no state income tax.

Best wishes.
