2010 Tax Filing Season

Question: How long will it take if I send in a ‘09 amended tax return this month and a ‘10 amended tax return in March?
My mother-in-law missed something on my husband’s 2009 amended tax return (he was single at the time) and we’re going to get it amended this month and send it off. Then in February we’re buying a house and we’re going to be amending our 2010 return in March (since we’re going to be filing our 2010 regular return this month) to get our homebuyer’s credit (he’s military; Obama signed us another year for homebuyer’s credit; deadline April 30, 2011). How long will it take to get these amended returns refund back since tax season just hit?
Answer: No real way to tell. For the 2009 one, some will depend on what it is that he’s amending. Probably 6-8 weeks, could be longer, probably not much shorter.
For the homebuyer credit, probably around 3 months, but again, could be more or less than that.

Question: Form 8379- tax estimators online ACCURATE?
HELP! I had to file a form 8379 (thanks for the nasty surprise, HUBBY). My question is, in trying to figure out how much I will one day get back as my “portion”, are the online Tax Refund estimators accurate? If so, do I use all the same info as on my regular return, or do I change my filing status to married filing separately, and use both of our incomes, etc.? Please help, I need some light at the end of this tunnel…
I have already completed the form. I would like to know if I can figure out how much I will get back if I use the online tax estimators.Answer: if you had income,by filing the 8379 injured spouse form you will get back whatever your refund would have been if you had filed separate.
no,you keep your filing status as married/joint and yes use the same info from both your incomes.on the injured spouse form there’s a space for you(the injured spouse) and one for your spouse.the first space is the total of everything on you’ll Joint Return, then in the 2nd space you would put in your income only, then in the other your spouse’s.
for the deduction if you’ll took the standard deduction put the total deduction taken in box-A then split that total between you two in box-B and C. federal taxes withheld would be the total between you both in box A then your separate withholding and then your spouse’s.
no,because if you calculate it using any other status it will change your refund drastically, because you will have a higher tax liability resulting in a smaller refund amount than what you can expect,so the amount you get from the calculator wouldn’t be accurate enough.

Question: How much tax will I pay / get back (canada)?
Sorry, I know this kind of thing is asked a hundred times, but all the calculators I’ve seen on the internet say different things when I feed them my info, so I just thought I’d ask some people who might actually know.
Okay, so I live in Ontario, I made 32158.29 from my job last year and paid 5145.12 in income tax and 419.10 in union dues.
I also recieved 3256.00 in EI benifits and paid 392.00 in income tax
Finally, I put 1000.01 into an RRSP.
Will I get a refund and, if so, how much will it be?
Thanks to the first poster. No dependants, no… anything else really. All other info is normal. No deductions or expenses.

Question: Will I have to pay taxes on my unemployment compensation?
I made approx. $13K in 2009, all from unemployment. I have one dependent. I’m thinking of letting her father claim her, as he had earned income. I did a calculator on TurboTax and it said that I didn’t owe or get a refund. Is this accurate? Do I even need to file a tax return?
Answer: If you claim her, you won’t owe any income tax. If you don’t claim her, you will owe around $125. And in either case, yes you need to file a tax return.
If your child lives with you and doesn’t live with her dad, then him having earned income is meaningless, since he wouldn’t be eligible for EIC – you only can get that if the child lives with you.
