Filing Taxes For 2008

Question: If I don’t file taxes in 2008 will I still get Bush’s Tax Aid?
I am currently a student and didn’t have a job in 2007, so I don’t need to file taxes in 2008
but I did file for taxes at start of 2007?
Will I get this tax aid?
Or should I file with no income except finicial aid for schooling( which I didn’t plan on filing )Answer: The plan hasn’t been finalized so no one knows.
If it’s like the one done in 2001, it will work as follows. A computer program will look at your tax return for 2007. if you made any money, it will assume you will make the same in 2008 and issue a check based on that amount. Then when you file in 2008, if you received only some or none of the rebate (either no income or didn’t file or didn’t file until after the checks were issued), you would get the money when you did the 2008 return. Those who already got the full amount would not get it a second time.
As for 2007, if any of your financial aid was a scholarship used for things other than straight tuition, it’s counted as wages. If your wage-only income is more than $5350, you will have a filing requirement. Loans don’t count since you will be paying them back.

Filing Separately Vs Jointly

Question: Tax software vs. Accountant?
My husband and I need to amend our taxes because previously we filed separately due to tax debt. Now that the debt is paid, we need to file jointly. I need to decide whether it’s more cost effective to hire an accountant or do it myself. They are charging $750 to amend six years. I am a full time graduate student; my husband is a half-time grad student; he works full time (my jobs have been small) and we have some interest income. Other than that, our taxes should be relatively simple. I anticipate getting marital tax breaks and student tax breaks, which should save us thousands, according to the accountant.
Will I find the same breaks if I amend them myself? Should I amend them? If so, is Turbo Tax the best?
Answer: Tax software hands down. As a CPA, i’ve heard nothing but great things about Turbo tax from those that use it. As a CPA, I can say that most Accountants including Accounting firms are crooks and are overcharging you for simple work.
