Help Tax Thresholds

Question: Didn’t the Conservatives promise they would raise the threshold of inheritence tax to one million?
If they get into offce and do that will the poor be paying to help the rich get even richer?
Answer: Just as a side thought – the government are going to get their hands on my hard earned money. Let’s take that for granted.
If I stop them taking it after I die, doesn’t that mean they’ll want to take more of it while I’m alive?
And I know when I’d prefer to pay it!
No one would be removed from poverty by raising the IHT threshold, and the shortfall in revenue resulting from raising the IHT threshold will have to be taken elsewhere.
More VAT? More income tax? Fewer services? Who would like to pay more tax now, so that I won’t have to worry about IHT when my parents pass on?
It has been argued that IHT is a fair tax, in that it doesn’t penalise the person taxed – only someone gaining from an unearned windfall.
I’m not sure I’d go that far, but I’d rather be taxed when I’m dead than when I’m alive.
