File Taxes Deadline

Question: Can you still file taxes after the deadline?
Answer: Of course. In fact if you do not owe any money there is no penalty.
There is only interest and penalties if you owe money. If there is a refund due you have 3 years to file before you lose it.
If someone can point to a specific place where it states that there is a penalty if you owe no money please point it out to me. Interest is on unpaid amounts. A penalty is added when you do not pay by the deadline. Where is the penalty for not filing?

Filing Taxes For 2008 Deadline

Question: FAFSA – 2008 tax information?! My taxes won’t be filed until April!!?
I’m extremely confused. I’ve tried to fill out the FAFSA several times before, and with the deadline approaching, I have to hurry up! Last Saturday when I filled it out it asked for my parents’ 2008 tax information. I asked my mom, and she only had the 2007 tax information because they haven’t filed the 2008 taxes yet. What do I do?!?!?!?! The FAFSA site EXPLICITLY asks for 2008, but what do people do since 2008 taxes don’t have to be filed until April?!?!
I don’t know why I seem to be the only one having this problem. I tried entering the 2007 tax info instead, but when I was about to submit it, I had to confirm that all the information I have was correct. And I know for a fact that my 2007 info is very very veryyyyyy different than my 2008 info.
Answer: The best scenario is to have your parents file their taxes now. April is the deadline to file taxes, but they can be done now. However, if they won’t file their taxes now, you can estimate. You should only use the 2007 taxes as an estimate if your parents expect their 2008 taxes to be similar. If 2008 will be very different, then they should use their 2008 W2’s (which they already have.) Be sure to indicate on the FAFSA that they “Will File” and NOT “already Filed”. That way FAFSA will send you a reminder after April 15th to go back and change your estimated answers to the exact answers once the tax deadline has passed.
Just keep in mind, if a school offers you an award prior to you making a correction to your FAFSA to change the estimates to the actual amounts, the award you were offered can be changed (up or down depending on the change in your EFC, expected family contribution)
The most important thing is to file your FAFSA NOW!

Deadline For Filing Taxes For 2008

Question: Question about Taxes – Overseas Exemption on Non-Taxable Income.?
I moved with my family to Surigao City, Philippines. We have been living in Surigao City continuously since October 2008. We did file taxes last year having only been in the Philippines a few months before the filing deadline. We live on my VA Service-connected Disability which is rated at 40%, the $644 is enough for my family to live comfortably. The VA payment is non-taxable income, and we have no other sources of additional income. My wife and I have a 15 year old son and all are US citizens, but my wife and son have received their Philippines Duel Citizenship this past year.
We have been living in the Philippines for over 18 months.
We have no taxable income.
We have a 15 year old dependent.Questions:
Do I file a Tax Return on non-taxable income?
What Form do I use?
What exemptions do I have, if any?I am sure this is a unique situation and have found no information on the internet that directly refers to my particular situation.
Answer: Dear James: You do not have a filing requirement if the VA money is your only source of income. You may want to consider an informational return to CYA for future years. The IRS may ask in the future about years you did not file. (not likely but possible) Just file with a 1040 with a notation of your current address, length of time at that address. Probably just fill in zeros.
Yes your situation is unique.
