Question: What happens if you claim head of household on your W-4 and you are not the head of a household?
I didn’t understand what the head of household option meant on my W-4 and checked it off as an exemption. I now know that I do not qualify for that exemption. I know I’ll have to pay higher taxes this year because of it. What I’m wondering is what percentage of my income I should expect to pay in taxes? Also, will I get in any trouble. This was an honest mistake.
Answer: There is no punishment for indicating wrong information on your W4. A W4 only tells your employer how much to withhold from your check, it has no effect on how much tax you end up paying. You should change it to single (or whatever you file on your 1040). The only penalty you may receive is for not withholding enough tax throughout the year.
