Question: Can you answer a stupid sales tax question?
I’m not sure if the state matters or not but I’m adding up local (Washington State) taxable sales and out of state non-taxable sales and here’s my stupid question: When I consider the nontaxable sales they zero out my sales tax due, but don’t I still have to pay the sales tax that’s been collected? There is a place to subtract foreign and out of state sales, refunds etc. In fact all the refunds, discounts, etc only relate to the non-taxable sales. But we collected sales tax on local sales and there were no discounts or refunds to local sales. Yes, the out of state sales are much larger than local sales.
Answer: I think you may be confused with how the form flows. Sales tax forms usually flow like this:
Start with total sales and subtract out resale sales, exempt sales, out-of-state sales, etc. to end up with taxable sales. Non-taxable sales aren’t subtracted from your taxable sales. They are usually subtracted from TOTAL sales.
You must remit the sales tax you collected from your customers (less the discount, if WA offers one) to the state, otherwise it’s considered fraud, and the state will come after you!
Also, WA doesn’t have a straight sales tax, they have a B&O tax, so make sure you’re filling out the right forms.
