Didn't File Taxes Last Year

Question: Didn’t file state taxes last year?

This is my second time doing my own taxes, and I’m pretty clueless. I didn’t file my state taxes last year, but I didn’t owe anything. I did however, receive my federal refund. This year I’m doing it right, but is there anyway to go back and file from last year and still receive the state refund?

Answer: When filing taxes, the federal government and most state governments allow you up to 3 yrs (from the DATE (april 15) that the return was DUE – so if this return was due 4/15/08, you have until 04/15/11) to file an amended return (if you already filed one and want to change something), or to FILE a return. Some individual state governments may have a different policy, so check your specific state to be sure.

So to answer your question, yes, you should be able to go back and file your state return from last year, and receive the state refund, as long as your state isn’t ‘broke’ – and issuing IOU’s, like California and a few other states are already :( .

However, please be aware that this particular refund will be put to the bottom of the pile, so realistically it will not be addressed until after the majority of the tax returns due this April are processed.

You should be able to locate all the info you need regarding your individual state’s department of revenue etc, by doing a search for – for example: “kansas department of revenue” – or whatever.

Good luck and hope this helps!
