Married Filing Single

Married Filing Single

Question: Which one is better: Married Filing Jointly or filing as single (not married)?

I’m getting divorced and we have the option of finalizing on Dec. 30th or waiting until after the new year. If we wait we can file jointly but I’m not sure if there’s any financial benefit to it. She made about 40k and I made about 35k. We paid 9k in mortgage interest, 1k in property taxes, and about 1k in student loan interest.

Answer: If you go to www.irs.gov you can access the forms and instructions to calculate your taxes both ways and determine which way is more beneficial.

Be aware that it will only be an approximation, as the forms may not have been finalized yet.
(But it should still give you an idea of how it will work out.)

He’s bringing Boston fresh attitude

Mitchell B. Weiss doesn’t come out of the traditional school of Boston politics. As the 33-year-old Harvard Business School graduate prepares to ascend to his new job as Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s chief of staff, you won’t find him tossing back pints at Doyle’s or poring over ward and precinct numbers from the last election.
