Tax Married Filing Jointly

Question: How does FAFSA take into consideration married Filing Jointly tax returns?

I am married and I filed jointly. My wife and I both go to school full time. I don’t understand how to fill this out on my FAFSA. They ask what my wife made AND what I made in 2008, but I can’t seperate the income. Since we filed jointly it is all together.

Answer: You can (and are expected to) separate the two incomes, but you will have to look at each of the W2 forms to do it. You are correct, the two incomes are combined on the tax forms.

The Savvy Senior: Tax help for lower-income seniors

Dear Savvy Senior: What are the 2009 IRS minimum filing requirements for seniors? My income was very low last year, and I’m thinking I may not have to file tax returns this year. What can you tell me?
