Tax Return Filing Jointly

Tax Return Filing Jointly

Question: Can I amend my 2006 tax return to change my status from married Filing Jointly to married filing separately?

I divorced my former husband in Jan of 2007 so we were married in 2006. We filed a tax return together and just received a notice from the IRS that we owe additional taxes. These are all items my ex-husband is responsible for. He refuses to cooperate in providing the information necessary to respond to the IRS.

Answer: No you can’t now amend your 2006 tax return filed as Married Filing Jointly.
