Tax Refund Loans

Question: federal Tax Refund garnishment and student loans..calling to see if they will garnish?

Won’t calling those numbers to see if they will garnish your refund in a sense flag you and make it more likely that they garnish the refund?? Whereas if you never contacted them, they may not have noticed you?
Is there any way of knowing before hand if they will garnish it? Or is it just something that you have to wait and see? And do they take the WHOLE thing?! :(

Answer: They generally have to tell you before they garnish your wages. No they don’t take the whole thing. By law, they can take MAX 15% of your salary (of the whole month) for ONE garnishment. If you have two or more, the max they can take is 25% (so 15% would go to one, 10% to the other).
