Question: What are the rules for filing Head of household?
I have been seperated (not “legally”) from my spouse since 1998. The first following year, my tax prep guy recommended I file HOH. We have two Children who live with me 100% of the time. I have been filing HOH ever since…but am wondering if this is ok. I have since moved out of state, ex is not involved with the children at all. Divorce has not happened due to personal and financial reasons.
I currently have a live in fiance who I share utility expenses with and he also helps with other expenses. I however, contruibute more to household finances, as I make more.
Someone said I cannot file HOH if there is another adult filing single in home. I don’t think this is true. Any advice would be appreciated.
Answer: While HOH was not intended for this situation, you still qualify.
1. Still married, but not living with ex-husband, check.
2. Paying more than half of the bills for the house, check.
3. Have minor child living with you, check.

My uncle left his employment at the end of july to live in sweden,we filled in the relevant forms and sent them off,he has nominated myself to be the payee of any refund and they have my bank details,i obviously cannot speak to tax office regarding this as it,s not my name on the actual claim,how long does it take to go into my account thanks.
Answer: Whenever I’ve had one, it has simply been done by taxing me less in the subsequent year, so if you’re expecting an actual “cheque in the post”, not sure.
