Tax Return for Widow

A tax return for a widow taxpayer can be filed as a single status, married filing jointly, qualifying widow or widower with dependent child, married filing separately or even head of household depending on circumstances.

If the spouse of the taxpayer died in one of the two years prior to the current tax year, then follow the following flow chart to determine how the widow taxpayer should file his or her tax return.

Are you entitled to file a joint return?  Did your spouse die this tax year? YES

Married but not filing with spouse

 NO

Main home for qualifying person? Did your spouse die this tax year? YES Head of household

Married but not filing with spouse

 NO
